THE DESIGN OF THE COURTYARD HOUSE WAS TO CREATE THREE SEPARATE UNITS THAT UNITE AT THE CENTER. THE UNIFIED ROOF DEFINES THE SOCIAL SPACES THAT ARE DESIGNED TO LINK THE RESIDENTS ONE TO ANOTHER AND ALTOGETHER IN THE CENTRAL COURTYARD. LIVING IN THE ORIGINAL HOUSE AT THE MAR VISTA TRACT NEIGHBORHOOD IS AN ELDERLY COUPLE, WHO ARE NOW BOTH RETIRED. AS THEY ARE GETTING OLDER, ONE OF THEM IS REQUIRING A CAREGIVER TO HELP WITH THEIR HEALTH. THE COUPLE WANTS TO RENOVATE THE EXISTING HOUSE BY MAKING THE BATHROOM AND OTHER SPACES ACCESSIBLE FOR THEM. THE COUPLE ALSO DECIDED TO BUILD TWO ADDITIONAL HOUSING UNITS ON THE PROPERTY. MOVING INTO THE SECOND UNIT IS THE PART-TIME CAREGIVER, WHO IS A SINGLE PARENT WITH A YOUNG CHILD. MOVING INTO HER PATIENT’S HOUSING WOULD BE BENEFICIAL GIVEN HER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. THE THIRD UNIT IS OCCUPIED BY THE ELDERLY COUPLE’S ADULT DAUGHTER AND PARTNER, WHO ALSO LIVE IN LOS ANGELES. THE DAUGHTER AND HER HUSBAND ARE GOING THROUGH FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY AND DECIDED TO MOVE IN WITH THEIR PARENTS.
